This car is really different.
No steering wheel, you drive it with a joystick. No pedals either.
Can you drive with a joystick? Your kids probably can.
The influence of Video game in our lives has really arrived?

its cool but its not safe for driving, u drive it like games, in games vehicles dun get hurt, but it does, n wen your vehicle’s body get scratched, your heart too, its cool, but in pictures
This doesn’t look real to me. Ever wondered how to handle the joystick with two hands while sitted. I need a demo on this before i get overly thrilled. It’s a really cool car though, but appears delicate to handle.
This car looks awesome, and it definently IS different.
However. BMW tried doing the same deal with making something different and ended up losing millions having their whole electronics controlled by a single joystick. Distracted drivers with their joysticks get into accident too easily. I feel this will help cause the distraction like BMW series. In a different way.
Just lookin’ at this vehicle makes me think the future we’ve been waitin’ for finally arrive; but how the heck can somebody drive this device? It doesn’t look too safe to manupilate
I must admin, i have been wishing that a car maker of some kind would bring this idea out, i bet it was designed by someone who plays a lot of flight simulator.
I wonder how fast it could go, and how stable it would be at thoes speeds!!!
Aircraft use this technology - “fly-by-wire”; there is little to no direct linkage to the actual power/control mechanism.
Many braking systems in cars are this way also however, I was not aware that the U.S. had approved of this technology. Countries in the EU have already approved of steer-by-wire.
I think that it is meant so that if you are in the drivers seat, you can drive it, and if you are in the passengers seat you can drive it. That is why the buttons on the joystick are the same on the right and left side.
I likes cool with a flare, based on the photo images. Unfortunately I believe the functionality of the car is not quite there yet, for example some of the console control should be place on the left/right side (pending on who’s driving) to allow the driver the flexibilty to preform the functions(pwering down the window that sort of things) with the left/right hand and still be able to concentrate on the road. That’s just my 2 cents worth.
Jase,
Forklifts go about 10 miles an hour in a parking lot. We’re talking about 70mph on a freeway with lots of innocent drivers who are actually in control of their vehicles. This is a dangerous idea. If it could fly, that would be another story.
i think they are the controls/buttons are the same on both sides to account for if the driver is left or right handed.. not necessarily so either passenger or driver could drive it..now the question would be if all you lefties would be able to drive from the passenger seat..?
Hey, you gotta put the drivers seat in the center of the car if the joystick is in the center of the dash. Every dummy knows that. Somebody’s gonna get hurt in this thing. (:>
For a one arm person , in which i am right hand only this is a great idea going to test drive one in my area , ill come back and tell you all about it …
I saw something to this effect from Mercedes about 10 or so years ago. How new is this? It must be from before the previous generation S Class, because if this is recent, then using the old S Class headlights for your representation of the future sucks.
Anyway, Good to see Mercedes making quality cars again.
But they have a long way to go. Dealerships still need to wake up and go the extra mile. Some BMW dealerships have grand piano playing for you while you wait, with coffee and biltong. That’s a lot better that being offered a muffin at the benz dealership next door.
The joystick is mounted in such a way that the car can be manufactured using one assembly process for both European and North American models. When sitting on the left you would use the left-hand side of the stick, and vice-versa.
This car is the best! c’mon, think about it, wheather you are left or right-handed, you will still drive this thing sitting on the left or right seat. THIS CAR IS JAGGED UP!
Those controls would probably be a hard sell, in any market. People love steering wheels. Its like, remember in the late-1980s when GM cars (and a lot of other American makes) had all-digital instrument clusters? It was one of those things that sounded good on paper but people didn’t care for it. Today most cars have the manual read-out with needles that move around, plus digital underneath it. Another thing that sounded good on paper and then didn’t work: Those seatbelts that were attached to your car door and slid open and closed when you opened the door latch. Bad theory.
If you are driving with the right hand on the joy stick, how can you adjust the AC the diefroster, etc, without taking your hand off of the joystick? Interesting idea but has some major problems. What about people who cannot walk and chew gum? I guess they buy a YUGO.
It looks great! You will always need both hands on the wheel, opps on the joy stick! Talking on the cell, drinking coffee, tea is out. Great idea. Safer than ever. Excellant
wooow
this car is amazing
but i wonder how u can get the joystick 2 ur seat coz it is in the middle of the car
any way this car is cool
looks good on the outside 2
how much is it?
am a super reach boy, i would like to buy it but i would like to drive it and not my driver. lol. good luck mercedez company in selling it but i have to go in my private jat to saudi arabia
Sorry but this is an old concept. This car isn’t at all a new idea and was shown in the F200 Imagination made on a collaborative effort by Daimler Chrysler and Mercedes at a car show in Paris back in 1996. Interesting idea though, but the steering is called “drive-by-wire” and is electronicly assisted. In other words if the chip suddenly breaks at 90 you are screwed. The engine is nice as it is a v-12 so plenty of power there.
On another note: Someone mentioned that the center mounted joystick would allow for simple production in US and Europe….not true. It is more like a helicopter in the fact that one hand will control the direction of the car while the other would control the speed and such. Take a closer look….it is an ergonomic design and would allow both of your arms to be on the arm rest :.HINT.: one control is on the driver side door.
I think this car is a fantastic new idea that could possibly revolutionize the driving experience for every human on Earth. Also a revised drivers test would be required for people who bought these new cars and offering a new test would not be cost effective. And also James, did you ever get a chance to test drive this car? At first glance I didn’t see the other control on the driver’s side door. I think that would be hard to drive if you only had one arm. But all in all I like the car. Exept the rims. haha
wi fi is in everything, and the safety is not the issue.as a tech for harley we have wi fi thottle on the bikes-the sad part is,WHAT HAPPENED TO SHIFTING GEARS?an automatic trans is nice for traffic but if you like to drive and OH IF YOU CAN’T DRIVE A MANUAL TRANS YOU SHOULD HAVE YOUR LICENCE REVOKED OR FORCED TO TAKE A COURSE!!!!nice job benz!if others haven’t learned yet 1st gets the money.ALL ABOUT BUCKS!!GET THAT BUCK!!
