This is the new Mercedes Benz SCL600.

This car is really different.
No steering wheel, you drive it with a joystick. No pedals either.
Can you drive with a joystick? Your kids probably can.
The influence of Video game in our lives has really arrived?

this is sick! and i mean that in the best way.

at least mercedes is moving towards the future.

and all you scaredy cats that think you can’t drive this, you’re right, so stay off the road and let the gamers take over…they will anyway.

This doesn’t look real to me. Ever wondered how to handle the joystick with two hands while sitted. I need a demo on this before i get overly thrilled. It’s a really cool car though, but appears delicate to handle.

This car looks awesome, and it definently IS different.

However. BMW tried doing the same deal with making something different and ended up losing millions having their whole electronics controlled by a single joystick. Distracted drivers with their joysticks get into accident too easily. I feel this will help cause the distraction like BMW series. In a different way.

Just lookin’ at this vehicle makes me think the future we’ve been waitin’ for finally arrive; but how the heck can somebody drive this device? It doesn’t look too safe to manupilate

I must admin, i have been wishing that a car maker of some kind would bring this idea out, i bet it was designed by someone who plays a lot of flight simulator.

I wonder how fast it could go, and how stable it would be at thoes speeds!!!

Geeze guys cmon, if you can drive a forklift without pedals or steering - why couldnt it work in a car? There are two joysticks on it by the way

Aircraft use this technology - “fly-by-wire”; there is little to no direct linkage to the actual power/control mechanism.

Many braking systems in cars are this way also however, I was not aware that the U.S. had approved of this technology. Countries in the EU have already approved of steer-by-wire.

  16. George says:

I think that it is meant so that if you are in the drivers seat, you can drive it, and if you are in the passengers seat you can drive it. That is why the buttons on the joystick are the same on the right and left side.

I likes cool with a flare, based on the photo images. Unfortunately I believe the functionality of the car is not quite there yet, for example some of the console control should be place on the left/right side (pending on who’s driving) to allow the driver the flexibilty to preform the functions(pwering down the window that sort of things) with the left/right hand and still be able to concentrate on the road. That’s just my 2 cents worth.

What an ugly pretentious car, and what a dangerous interface for driving. This thing will kill thousands.

  23. Glen says:

    Jase,
Forklifts go about 10 miles an hour in a parking lot. We’re talking about 70mph on a freeway with lots of innocent drivers who are actually in control of their vehicles. This is a dangerous idea. If it could fly, that would be another story.

You have to dedicate roads for the machine to work. Joystick control works with vains. very snappy. I thrilled. Whatz the cost?

    Posted August 24, 2007 @ 11:28 am
  26. KartKid says:

i think they are the controls/buttons are the same on both sides to account for if the driver is left or right handed.. not necessarily so either passenger or driver could drive it..now the question would be if all you lefties would be able to drive from the passenger seat..?

  27. James says:

Hey, you gotta put the drivers seat in the center of the car if the joystick is in the center of the dash. Every dummy knows that. Somebody’s gonna get hurt in this thing. (:>

I saw something to this effect from Mercedes about 10 or so years ago. How new is this? It must be from before the previous generation S Class, because if this is recent, then using the old S Class headlights for your representation of the future sucks.

Anyway, Good to see Mercedes making quality cars again.

But they have a long way to go. Dealerships still need to wake up and go the extra mile. Some BMW dealerships have grand piano playing for you while you wait, with coffee and biltong. That’s a lot better that being offered a muffin at the benz dealership next door.

The joystick is mounted in such a way that the car can be manufactured using one assembly process for both European and North American models. When sitting on the left you would use the left-hand side of the stick, and vice-versa.

Those controls would probably be a hard sell, in any market. :| People love steering wheels. Its like, remember in the late-1980s when GM cars (and a lot of other American makes) had all-digital instrument clusters? It was one of those things that sounded good on paper but people didn’t care for it. Today most cars have the manual read-out with needles that move around, plus digital underneath it. Another thing that sounded good on paper and then didn’t work: Those seatbelts that were attached to your car door and slid open and closed when you opened the door latch. Bad theory. :P

If you are driving with the right hand on the joy stick, how can you adjust the AC the diefroster, etc, without taking your hand off of the joystick? Interesting idea but has some major problems. What about people who cannot walk and chew gum? I guess they buy a YUGO.
